It's Not Funny

How did I get so old so fast?  I am crestfallen.  Today I forgot the four digit code number for my debit card.  Twice.  I was shocked (and somewhat embarrassed.) It is gone; erased from my memory.  I cannot recall it and will have to go to the bank to get a new card and number.  The bank can't even tell me what it is.

It's been nice knowing you and isn't this little girl the cutest?

I'm with you. The last time my four digit bank number self erased from my brain, I got a new one and immediately stepped over to the ATM and changed it to my childhood phone number. Take that, you old brain!

I am going to change it to another one I have. I literally have pages of passwords and numbers, It is ridiculous. I used to be better at numbers than names. And, I thought it was the short term memory that goes first. Wonder what losing the long term memory first means...

Memory is a funny old thing. I wonder why my mind does seem to fasten on to some bits that seem very unimportant, yet seems to resist other matters.

Please do tell more about that photograph.

And don't forget...full moon tonight. xo

I thought you were going to chide the parents of that precious "old lady" for making fun of us "ladies of a certain age." Her predecessor about two years ago, complete with white wig and tee-ninecy tubular walker with four tennis balls on the feet, was the most charming Halloween costume I'd ever seen---I still go back and have a look and SMILE.

I'm finding hand gestures come to me more and more lately, as I get all the way from HERE into THERE, and have no idea what I went for, til I circumscribe in the air several steps of my going and arrival. But then, when I've gone for the sugar and I see the Comet, I'll as likely pick THAT up, remembering it's time to scrub SOMETHING.

I sat for a few moments on the drive on Sunday, looking our eyes full of the splendour of Autumn all in full blaze of glory, as he did a sentimental swoop past our "old" house---the rental we lived in for four years before we bought this one. We were speaking of "if we'd known then what a deteriorating neighborhood we were living in," and my mind raced to "how far is it from the one we're in now," and it took me BLOCKS and little diagrams in my head and with my hands, silently plotting the course as I hoped he wouldn't notice how lost I was for that moment, whilst I traced my mental map of the way home.

And I count myself 100% improved over the stupor and maze-mind I was in for three months while all the detritus and debris of the kitchen reno were in my path EVERY DAY. So DO know that you've HAD A LOT ON YOUR PLATE, if anyone has, and those extra helpings of stress and concern and fatigue and worry---when those dissipate, you'll regain your old sassy, witty, brainy self. If I'm not a poster child, I don't know who is.

A pox on PINS and those who thought 'em up.

Well Frances, I'll be howling mad at it. Isn't the little old girl cute? Good Halloween costume. I found it on Google. I'm going to go fill up with gas today and try once more on the card. At least I don't have to face someone and try to explain how I have forgotten something I've been using for years.

Yes, I thought they were going to read our iris before now. I bought some furniture last week and they made me put my fingerprint on the back of my check. That was a first.. Move in day was last week along with ADT and the movers lost the rails to my antique iron bed. I went back to the storage unit and found them. So glad as the bed was unusable without them. Then the furniture was delivered and one chair leg was askew and they had to deliver another one the next day. Of course, while waiting for hours on them. My memory has always been my proudest asset and it is scary to me when it fails me nowadays. No, that little cutey is too funny. How do we get so old so fast?

Fear not Donna, it happens to us all. I have my numbers on a little bit of card, with no explanatory details, hidden in a safe place at home, because I have once forgotten and got half way home before it fell into my mind.

Thank you for commiserating Pat. It still hasn't come to me. I will make sure and write the new one down. Perhaps I should tattoo it on myself somewhere along with my address and phone number.

Join the club Donna .... and yes .... she's so cute ... I love the glasses !! XXXX

But Jacqueline, I don't want to be in that club. She is darling. I remember every year I'd don a white sheet and be a ghostly spirit - just loved all that candy we'd get in our grocery sack.

I feel better, though I still can't remember the number. Beatrix Potter books at Costco? I've never been to one, but it sounds wonderful. I've said it before Monique, we have so many similarities.

Deborah Nolan said...

Ah Donna don't feel bad. The other day I gave someone the last four digits as my phone number. You are not alone. This picture is the best. Hugs

donna baker said...

Thanks Deb. I'm going in a while to try again.

It happened to me once too - I think we do it automatically, but when we stop to think about the number it's gone. I walked away from the machine went back and just put the number in straight away. It's no joke getting old. Love the picture.

donna baker said...

I tried it several more times and finally went to the bank and got another one. If I forget this one, I'll be in lockup. I thought this costumed darling was so cute.

Amanda Summer said...

Ah the old menopause brain - know it well :))

That picture is THE cutest!!!!

donna baker said...

Unfortunately, Amanda, that was ten years ago, but I found a scrap of paper today with the digits and would never have guessed it: didn't ring a bell. I went yesterday and got a new one that hopefully, I won't forget. Makes me remember to just enjoy each and every little thing in the here and now.

Donna, thank you for the photo source info. Yes, she's a darling.

I am now thinking that the passwords "necessary" for my daily life seem to be increasing at a quick rate...and then there are the passwords that expire and need to be reset...not using any version of those passwords previously chosen in ...well...that varies. Sometimes it's four uses, sometimes a time element enters the challenge.

Annoying? Oh, yes!

Don'r despair Donna! I do it all the time... hey, did I brush my teeth?

donna baker said...

Thanks Jeri. I don't know why it upset me so. I've forgotten words for quite sometime, but this shocked me.

Cobalt Violet said...

Yes, she's adorable and that totally happened to me. It just left my brain one day.

donna baker said...

Well I am glad it happens to others. I have this fear of dementia I guess. Used to think it wouldn't be such a bad way to go, but now wouldn't want to burden my family.
