Bed Saga

I told you I never learn.  After the bed of my dreams was shipped back, I have gone without one.  Until I saw this one at Soft Surroundings.  The 'Burgundy' headboard would solve the mattress and box springs problem and was a better deal.  Or, so I thought.  I've been a long time customer of SS and love them.

So, I ordered and waited for the second shipping company to deal with.  They brought it, but would not bring it in the house, unlike the full set up by Anthropologie.  This weighed 111 lbs and the box was HUGE.  My husband and I dragged it in the house.  I moved everything and took down the pictures etc. and pulled the bed away from the wall.  Put it all back in place and left for awhile.

Upon return, the entire house reeked with the most horrendous petroleum, chemical smell.  I was worried there might have even been pesticide emitting toxic fumes.  WTF?  For the next four days I had to leave my outside bedroom door open, even at night.  My sister came to visit and narrowed it down to the stain on the decoration on the headboard.

Throughout the next several days, I was on the phone and computer with the Customer Care and Quality Assurance people.  Was this made in China, I asked (no, Indonesia).  They had never heard of such a thing. I tried and tried to explain to several different reps about this; that I was worried about the toxicity to me and my weenies who sleep with me.  Something that strong and chemical smelling must not be healthy.  I kid you not: I have never smelled anything this strong.  I could smell it in other rooms.

One guy said he'd credit me $30. back to my account.  No!  Another said $175. No!  I finally said to send another bed (that does't stink) and take this one back when they deliver the new one.  The next day, a lady from CC called and said she'd credit back more.  Because of all the hassle, I agreed - that and during all this my husband held a t-bar while his friend hammered it in the ground.  Yes he did - smashed his finger with a sledge hammer.  Bones were sticking out and pulverized and he won't be able to do much for a long while, but that's another story.

I am going to use a matte varnish to paint over the stained part to hopefully cover the smell, which has lessened, but is still there.  Especially since my head is next to it when sleeping.

Anyway...  This princess needs to stick peas up her nose when she goes to bed.

What a mess, how are you feeling ? No headaches I hope.
I bet it was the glue.
One of the workmen was applying some industrial strong glue to a project in my home. Later that evening the fumes were so strong I thought I was going to throw up. I lit candles, turned on the kitchen fan, closed doors and turned on the air on that side of the house. Horrible. We let it dry and then put 3 coats of paint over it. it is fine now but never again.

I hope your husband hand is better and will heal fast.
No bad weather I hope !

This is not going well. I hope the credit was a whole lot more. As for your husband, OMG. It sounds like a lot of work putting him back together again.

Poor you. Not having much luck are you. Hope the smell goes away soon.

Oh, I hardly slept that first night waiting for neurological symptoms in the weenies and me. Hubby will have some kind of surgery later when swelling goes down. Hopefully the hand surgeon says he can fuse it or something perhaps. I just need to not order furniture online anymore. I told them to let me know if they find out it is toxic, but I don't think they will. My sister was trying to get me to call the fire dept. that first night. I told her she was not helping and that if the chemicals didn't kill me, the frog on my porch and the water fountain would. She called me the next morning to make sure I was still alive.

Yes, I must remember no more online furniture purchasing. It wasn't his trigger finger and not his right hand, so those were plusses. Lots of pain though. Can't put pins into pulverized bones, but hand surgeon will know how to fix. I think after all the surgery, my husband might wish they had cut it off, but I won't tell him that.

At least it didn't kill me or my weenies. When I get back to the city, I'm going to try and varnish it with a low voc varnish.

Oh Donna what a dilemma. It is a beautiful headboard.
We had the same issue with teak like bookshelves we purchased from IKEA some years ago. It took a couple of months before the "offing" evaporated. It did go away eventually.
This headboard would work so nicely in my bedroom.

Have a great weekend.

Ooh deary me...
It would drive me crazy having to smell the fumes, since I tend to smell odors when nobody else can !
Yes...maybe the glue but who knows, hopefully it will dissipate after a few weeks, if it were mine I would banish it to the garage until no more smell....
It's a gorgeous headboard nevertheless.
Hope our husband heals quickly, bless his heart.

Glad to hear it Helen. I thought I couldn't be the only one. You have a beautiful weekend too.

I had planned to haul it to the garage until the hand accident. We barely got it in there. If you noticed, I didn't have time to style the shot :) Hope he heals quickly too. I need help! He has already taken the cast off; says it made it hurt. Told him it was to protect it from getting hurt. He never learns either. We must be dumb and dumber.

Oh Donna, I am resisting a string of very bad (if imaginatively arranged) words. I do hope you husband's hand will in the fullness of time heal and become as useful as it was earlier this week.

Online ordering has always been worrying to me. Nowadays, I might order a book or some yarn, but rarely anything else.

In the hope of making you smile, I wish to thank you for your recent package, and to ensure you that everything that it contained is perfect. xo

I was always leery of all my deliveries going to neighbors houses, which happened all too often. This was my final large online order. Tired of it all. I hope hubby's hand heels soon too. I can't imagine the pain. He was with friends at his cabin while I was at the city house. He is very active usually and I worry about him re-injuring it. I did smile. Perfect match.

Well I love that headboard..not unusual for smells..some of my clinets didn't want new homes..carpets..laminate floors etc..

it could go away..
I hope it does because it is very pretty.

On the other hand..no pun inteneded at all..I feel terrible for your poor hubby..I mean the man has suffered enough..
God bless him!

Jacques is digging up a bed for me..a garden bed..and I know it is painful for his hands..

we took youth for granted:)

Well, that sucks. I'd have to remove it to another room or garage until the gassing stopped. but it is a lovely headboard.

Thank you Monique. I am surprised about the smells. Guess I have lived in older places, but even during remodels I don't remember anything smelling or maybe my smeller has gotten older or perhaps more sensitive? I'm going to get a low VOC varnish to paint over it to get rid of the smell. I don't like going to bed smelling stink. Hubby has suffered. Hope they can fix it. That, and as I said, I can't do everything without help. I did when I was younger but can't anymore. Knee and hip acting up and I can't even open jars anymore. It is pitiful.

Yes, Elaine, it is just unbelievable to me that they would ship something that smelled like that. Hope it has faded before I go back to the city.

My goodness. And oy! for your husband too.

Places like Yankee Candle sell odor-eliminating candles. Maybe one like that would help a bit? http://www.yankeecandle.com/product/just-plain-fresh/_/R-1198008

Wow. A saga, indeed.

Oh Donna what a huge mess for you. I have also shopped SS too. Quality seems fine. Very sorry about this purchase. Your poor hubby. Is he in much pain? Well take care friend. Sending you a big hug.

donna baker said...

Val, though I can still smell it, it is much less. Don't think I'll have to haul it out and varnish over it.

donna baker said...

Deb - say a prayer for him. Yes, the pain has been bad, but over the weekend, he started coughing up large amounts of blood and will be undergoing surgery in the morning to see what is going on and hopefully to fix it. It is the throat thing or esophagus. Will know tomorrow.

Oh my. You guys'll be in my thoughts, Donna. ♥
