Fleur de Lis

They're everywhere!  I have planted Stella d'Oro day lilies and have a few orange ones, but I've never planted any others.  My mistake.  These orange speckled ones are some of the last of the lilies to bloom and I have been waiting and waiting to see what they were going to look like.  First of all, all blooms hang downwards, unlike all the others, and the stalks are 5 feet tall.  Then they opened.

The blooms all hang downwards like Chinese lanterns.  They are gorgeous.

And did I mention they are all huge flowers.

One of my very favorites.

They are really unbelievable.

This one had white speckles.

Isn't this one a beauty.

These are large also.

What can you say but gorgeous...

Sigh.

Okay, I lean toward pastels, but pretty just the same.

These are whoppers and I do love the deep salmon color.  And, all the lilies are planted in multiples the reason I say they are everywhere.

Finally, does any one know what those tall purple flower spires in the background are?  They look like phlox on a stem about 5 feet tall.  They are also everywhere in the garden and I just love them.  As I said in a previous post, the only thing I can squeeze in are seeds.

Outstanding selection! I've never met a lily I didn't like. :) I'm not too plant-savvy, unfortunately, so I can't say what the groovy, purple flowers are in the background.

What a wonderful post today. Your garden is so beautiful.
Did you plant all of these or are some from the former owner.
The second photo is so wonderful with the bottle tree, flowers, lake and a little cutie sniffing out lizards !

cheers, parsnip and thehamish

Love your lilies. I know the first as tiger lilies. If the others are heavily scented as well as beautiful they are almost certainly oriental liliums. No scent? Asiatic liliums. Their beauty blows me away each year.

You have a gorgeous garden Donna - my favourites are the tiger lilies. The purple flowers look like phlox to me.

I adore lilies Donna - there is not a more beautiful flower - their colours, their scent - their only draw back is that you have to keep well away from their stamens as they stain so.

I love these lilies!! So beautiful :)

I wish you a wonderful start into the new week :)

Bea, I love anything that comes back each year.

Didn't plant a thing in this garden by the lake. No room. It is all the owners doing. Emmy and Sister, like the Ham, sniff out everything.

Thank you Child. Good to know as I know nearly nothing about these lilies. Yes, I have begun to love them.

Thank you Elaine. The only phlox I have ever seen grows on a low growing carpet of leaves. I wondered if there was a different kind that grows on spikes. It is really pretty. Some are pink and others are variegated and the colors vary too. Boy, I hope they keep on blooming. Only problem is that some of them got a white fungus all over the leaves at the bottom of the plant.

Pat, that is funny you said that as I have learned that the hard way. Didn't even know I'd gotten it on me. Im a new fan though I think I may have to spray with a fungicide next spring.

I'm a newly with lilies, but won't be in the future. Thank you.

AMAZING Donna and I bet their perfume fills the air so doubly beautiful !! I am wondering if the purple flowers are Honesty .... Lunaria annua .... they also have really pretty paper thin, seed heads. XXXX

On second thoughts, the leaves look more like phlox !!!! XXXX

beautiful flowers. I only have day lilies, none of the tiger or asian lilies.

Wow Donna, those lilies are really putting on an amazing show! Well worth waiting for.

Thanks for sharing those pretty close up photographs with us. xo

donna baker said...

Yes Jacqueline, they do, but on stalks? I've only seen it growing first thing in the spring as a ground cover type plant.

donna baker said...

Thought you might know what the phlox type flower is. I have never even seen them for sale at the garden centers around here.

donna baker said...

And thank you Frances for sharing your areas of NYC. Im now a lily convert. Still having a little trouble getting used to the cannas, but they'll survive.

You have a wonderful variety of daylilies ,tigerlilies and orientals...They are GREAT fun to photo..I can tell you think so too..you are ahead of me..only one has bloomed..my least favorite..The one you first favor of the daylilies in your pictorial..is one I favor too..that beautiful perfect soft peach.

Donna, I forgot to mention that when I grew up I only associated lilies with going to church on Easter. Well, adding some vivid colors (and scents) to that initial association over the decades has been a treat. I'll try to take some NYC lily photos for you. xo

donna baker said...

Yes, I'd love that Frances. I'm going back to the city tomorrow and will be walking around sniffing them. And don't forget to email me about your meeting with Patti Smith when you find time.

donna baker said...

Thank you Monique. So glad you knew it as I said, I've only seen it grow first thing in the spring as a ground cover. It is just everywhere, but I did see a white powdery fungus on the leaves of many. Yes, I never knew what I was missing with the lilies. I have lots of iris tubers to take up there to fill in along one edge of the lake. That's the one the geese get up from the water to my backyard. Then it will all be filled in.

Your garden must smell wonderful with all those lilies and phlox. This is the first year I have grown lilies for many years as in our previous garden the lily beetle found us. They are bright orange and very difficult to catch! I love phlox the smell always reminds me of childhood. Sarah x

donna baker said...

I will look for those lily beetles. Thank you for telling me. Lots of new plants at the city house that I've never grown. It is very interesting as I have been gardening for over 30 years.

Stunning! Was the Emmy wandering beneath the Stella d'Oro?

Yes, my little shadows follow me everywhere.

Hay, Donna!

I've missed you!! We had a lonnng Fourth with the GRANDS and got home to computer needing mouth to mouth, so it's finally fixed and I'm getting around to seeing folks.'

Wow, what a lotta lilies---absolutely lovely. They're some of my favorites, especially the Days with their bright orange faces and expectant postures. And the Spiders, like great alien insects, posing and preening atop the stems.

So nice to have such bounty right at hand---I suppose most of them came with the house? I remember your great anticipation of winning the bid. What a lively, lovely life you live!

I mentioned your name twice lately, for we have had guests and the SHE of the two is a constant reader of LT, and knows your blog well, as well. She immediately zeroed in on the little letterbox on the wall,, and was charmed to open it and find bits of cut notebook paper ready to hand.

And then, when they were mentioning the Scottish Gatherings they're attending this Summer, and said the Cherokee Clan was the only Native American group which was a member of the Gathering. I told them about the Cherokee's Gift to Ireland, and they were so moved over that lovely gesture.

See ya---all TARD out, though I haven't done a THANG today. (but make Chris a big plate of fried chicken wings---all's right in HIS world).

Donna, the purple flowers are certainly PHLOX, one of my cottage garden favs. I love them with the coneflowers,it's a gorgeous garden bed!

donna baker said...

You are having a ball this summer it seems. I've been wondering what you were up to. I fear summer is going by too fast and fall will be upon us before we know it. Yes, all plants were inherited with the house as about the only thing I can fit in are seeds, but I'm not complaining. And, I love chicken wings.

donna baker said...

Glad to know it as I have never had any except for the creeping kind and didn't know they grew on stalks. They are really pretty, but the leaves had a white powdery covering all over and have turned brown and fallen off so I assume it was fungal and will spray them next spring. Do they come in pots at the garden store or seeds?

Sandra Cox said...

What a beautiful garden, Donna. I'm sure you've already got an answer but Phlox in the background. I had them in my old garden. Love 'em. They are such a great addition to a garden.

donna baker said...

Thank you Sandra. Someone said phlox but I've only ever seen the ground cover type - the earliest bloomer that blooms along with bulbs. Do you know if I should deadhead the phlox or any advice? Also, are they potted plants at the garden center or bulbs or seeds? I'd like to plant some down a small flower bed that runs down the side of the house.

Dear Donna - your flowers are gorgeous. You are so right we were on the same page last week. Your purple flowers look like phlox. What a stunning color. I have some tiger lilies that am hoping will open this week. Looks like yours already have. Have a super week. Hugs!

donna baker said...

Thank you Deb and hope your week goes good too. The tiger lilies took the longest to bloom, but went the fastest. But, those little Chinese lanterns were spectacular.
