Old Man Winter

Winter is not for sissies.  We had a mini blizzard yesterday; just a dusting of snow, but I thought the wind would blow my roof off.  The snow was blowing sideways.  It is so cold outside this morning, I am not going to go out to take a picture of snow on this little Christmas decoration.

It got down to 3 degrees last night; it hasn't been that cold since 1983. The lake out back is frozen over.  When I raised the blinds this morning, the ducks came in for a landing and slid around like ice skaters.

I stayed holed up in the house and there were many car wrecks on the highways.  I worry when it gets this cold - about the water lines freezing and bursting, the animals - everything.  Those brave souls that live up north must be made of stronger stuff than I am.

I made my first batch of peanut brittle yesterday for Christmas and guess what happened?  It pulled a tooth crown right off.  Now, I have to see if I can find a dentist to cement it back on as I'm not going back to the farm until after the holidays.  If I can't find a dentist in the city to do it, I guess I'll superglue it back on.  An expensive piece of candy. Aye yay yay! And, I'm not through shopping, wrapping and baking for Christmas.

HO HO HO!

ooo, I've done that, pulled a cap off. some dentists will do it, some won't without x-rays and all other sorts of things they can charge you for. and winter. even you are too far north for me. I don't want to be anywhere it snows. maybe once every 5 years or so. I can do a couple of inches of snow for a few days every five years or so.

My goodness Donna that sounds horrible hope everything is OK and will stay that way till Christmas. Oh my poor you with the tooth, that once happened to me with a toffee - that'll teach us to have a sweet tooth. I am sure everything will be ready in time for Christmas. Take care.

I can't imagine how mankind survived cold, long winters. I am not a fan. Give me a beach any day. The northerners probably feel the same about our hot summers.

You too Elaine. I know when I first call my dentist in the morning, he's going to ask what I was eating. I'm going to say, I'm not telling. His two sons live here and are also dentists, so I hope he can get me in to one of them. Only thing is, I'll have to say that it can't be till after 9am and be home by 4pm to give my weenie Sister her insulin shots. They are liable to tell me to jump in the lake.

Ooh, sorry to read about your cap being pulled off, and as much as I love peanut brittle, it's the reason I stopped making it, because I suffered the same dilemma years ago. Lets hope the dentist helps without tooo much fuss ;)
This cold weather has pit an end to any outings planned today, ice everywhere, and just yesterday it was 72 degrees !
Stay home and wait until the roads are clear, before taking a chance.
Take care,
Hugs,

I gave up my favorite Christmas treat, Jordan almonds, since one split off a molar, years ago. I'm still up for Marzipan, though. Good luck with that tooth.

Oh dear - an expensive piece of brittle methinks Donna. Now Joanne's idea of marzipan - thatis more in my line.

I am sorry to hear about your tooth. And do hope you find a sympathetic dentist.
Stay warm, stay safe.

A couple years ago my tooth and a tootsieroll pop had an encounter. Just recently had repaired $$$$ yikes!

Well I am certainly glad I am not the only one that has lost a crown on candy. I didn't even know a permanent crown could come off. I just hope I can get in cause my tongue won't stay away from the empty place and I have to remember not to chew on that side. I'm afraid if I try to put it back in I'll swallow it. Yes, I am still inside, but do need to go places. I think the roads are clear, but it is so darn cold I don't want to go out.

Thank you Joanne.

Guess my old chompers aren't as strong as they used to be. I've always had a thing about my teeth and have taken very good care of them. I just hope none of the tooth broke off with it.

And you are basking in warmth. I hope I can find someone too and hopefully it will just need gluing back on. I hope, I hope, I hope.

It has become incredibly expensive and I just went for semi-yearly cleaning and checkup last week. Still below freezing today though sunny and it will get down to 7 degrees tonight.

Love that sleigh Donna..♥
-15 F we just had:(
Howling winds..I worry about freezing rain..we had some during the night..turned to pretty snow..

re dentists.I can't even talk about them.
The profession I have the least confidence in.
it seems I have at last met one..that I can go to.
Honestly..no confidence.
Take care....I am sure it will be fine..

Oh thank you Monique. This sounds crazy, but I think I have a thing about my teeth because as a toddler, I knocked out my two front teeth and they stuck them back in which damaged the tooth buds. And, my parents used to hold me down and pull my teeth out. I was traumatized and have always had nightmares about my teeth shattering like eggshells and spitting out mouthfuls of them, so I'm not fond of tooth related things. I don't know what I'd do if I had to lose one. That is too cold, but it probably is pretty there. Will it stay snow covered till spring? Do you have to worry about pipes freezing? Just the hint of an ice storm scares me as we went 8 days without water and electricity after one once and trees down everywhere. Don't ever want to go through that again.

Donna, may I begin by letting you know how much I like the looks of that sled. It is charming.

The weather...not so much. We are also having some odd weather with zig zagging temperatures, bits of snow, bits of rain, repeated in new patterns. Downright odd, and not very friendly to certain last minute Christmas errands that are done on foot. Ah well, so it goes.

Your tooth experience has made me wonder if this might not be a very busy season for dentists. So many possibilities.

I've now finished making the gifts I was making, and have moved into cookie baking mode. Tomorrow will be the day to take parcels to the Post Office. I will take a book or magazine along with me for the time spent in the queue. xo

donna baker said...

As you know how I like old things, I bought that sled long ago and had planned to paint Rosebud on it. Never did. At least you have new boots to go out in and hopefully so much wool you can hardly move. I'm beginning to agree after hearing of many tooth accidents like mine. Hopefully that queue is inside. Hope you have much time to enjoy the holidays Frances.

So sorry to hear about your dental woes. I seriously dislike visiting the dentist! I don't even like having my teeth cleaned.

Bea said...

-love brittle, but tend to avoid it for fear of a dental disaster. I hope you're able to have a dentist put the crown back in place ASAP!

May you all survive the cold snap as best as can be. Greetings from temperate San Fran!

I am dreading trying to get it fixed this week of all weeks.

donna baker said...

I'm going to have to try and remember sticky things. I was testing the batch because I think the microwave here isn't as strong and now I know it for a fact. I keep thinking why did I try that. Hope your holidays are good ones Bea.

One day I bought a strawberry shake, and the next thing I knew, I was grinding on a huge piece of my front tooth that broke off.

donna baker said...

You too Sandra. Hope yours' are the best.

I guess our teeth just aren't as strong as when we were young.

Sorry to ear the candy bit you back. Sometimes it doesn't take much.I made toffee and caramels yesterday and made a mess letting the caramel go over the top of my pan.Hope you have a good holiday.

donna baker said...

Oy vey, now that would be a mess. I called the dentist's son yesterday and he had had an emergency appendectomy the night before, so in the grand scheme of things, I got off lightly. Hope you have a wonderful holiday too. I am almost through shopping and have to start the cooking part next.

La Table De Nana said...

Our homes are protected really re freezing..some of the older ones..not so protected..mind you if we have a long power failure..days..well I guess we would have to be vigilant..
I had recurring dreams about my teeth too..unfortunately they came true..a handful of unprofesionnal dentists.
They do exist..trust me..due diligence is needed

donna baker said...

Who would think tooth dreams would be so upsetting? I went and bought some glue stuff to glue crowns back on and couldn't get the crown back off... Crazy. So, I've left it alone I just hope I don't swallow it. That is horrible about your dental experiences. I've been to the same one for over thirty years, so I haven't had any bad experiences. With my tooth 'thing', I am glad I haven't had what you've had happen. I bet it is beautiful there for Christmas. The lake out back is still frozen and I've had to yell to some kids not to get on it as they say here not to go out on ponds and lakes.

Crumbling teeth, what a nightmare they are, I have had similar disasters over the last few years and know just how depressing it is!
LOVE your sledge. Is it a treble seater? What stories it could tell!

donna baker said...

I think it is Rosemary, but I would have been afraid to let my kids go down a steep incline on it. I have seen some really cute and very old sleds this month at the mall.
