The Vase

Sometimes I just can't help myself.  I spied this Weller pottery vase at the mall and just had to have it.   And yes, it was an impulse buy, but I have found that oftentimes, if you don't get it, it won't be there when you go back. The vase is in perfect condition, from around 1920, and I bought it as a gift to myself. I need a form of emoji here.

The little pockets that hold the flowers, are in the back of her skirt and her colors match the white horse painting above my fireplace.  Sometimes, you just gotta go for it.

BTW ~ I have many beautiful pottery vases and dishes in my booth and cannot give them away.

I love things that look like my grandmother had them.

I would have bought that in one breath.
I have never seen one like this.
How beautiful and elegant she is..
I have seen the head vases etc..I have 2 Bambis from when I was born..
I wonder which flowers you will put in it..you could show us one a week..
I am looking at her and thinking.
Great buy!Un trésor.

She was just too pretty to pass up Joanne.

That's what I thought too Monique. I looked all over her for a crack or manufacturers pop, kind of hoping for a flaw so I wouldn't buy it, but couldn't find a thing, so I carefully laid it on my purse and watched while they wrapped her in paper to make sure they didn't knock her around. I thought of tulips, but really, I just like looking at her.

She is lovely - and somethings you just HAVE to buy. I have no doubt that you will smile each time you see her. Which is a win.

donna baker said...

Yes, Child. I love her.

We need more of this, in our life today, than some of the silly computer graphics. Such style and grace in the form of pottery. Most excellent.

Dear Donna - I can understand why you couldn't resist. This vase reminds me of something similar my Mom has in her cupboard. Need to ask her where she found hers and if she knows the year. Hey by the way have a wonderful day. Hugs!

Sandra Cox said...

Ooh, I can see why you wanted her. She has beauty as well as character.
Here's hoping someone comes by your booth tomorrow, sees those beautiful vases and snaps them up.

donna baker said...

Thank you Michelle. The old things are so special.

donna baker said...

Aw sweet Debbie. I bet they sold for a few dollars back in the day. Maybe less, but didn't they do good work? Big hug back to you.

donna baker said...

And I've marked it al down so low already. I brought some of them home as I didn't want them to get damaged.

She has magnificent form. I can see why you could not pass her up! I have certainly paused on purchasing things that were then gone before I'd even left the shop. To wait is to miss out, usually.

donna baker said...

That is what I thought about this one. I haven't seen one like it before. Sculptures yes, but never a vase.

She is delightful. I love the idea of those pockets.

it's a beautiful piece. there is a pair of candlesticks at the store, painted metal flowers and leaves that I just love and want but have zero use for. every Saturday I look to see if they are still there.

donna baker said...

Yes Pat, I can't wait to see her with some flowers. What would you put in her?

donna baker said...

This same booth had a gorgeous vase last year of giant white herons and cattails and I didn't get it. This time I didn't want it to get away. I am the same way and trying to rid all the stuff I no longer need nor want.

Wow, lovely! I've always found that I more regret the thing I didn't buy that continues to haunt me than the money I saved and thought I shouldn't spend. Recently I found 2 gorgeous paintings of angels, the painters trained by missionaries in the art of cathedral painting in one of the South American countries. I didn't buy them at $150 each but told the owner I was interested and thinking about it. I did not buy them and when I returned some time later, she'd raised the price to $750 each! How very un-angelic! I told her how disappointed I was that she'd raised the price and by so much. She told me she raised it mainly because she decided she loved them and didn't actually want to part with them. I won't be buying them now but I can still go look at and enjoy them. Thank you for sharing your beautiful piece with us! Happy New Year to you! xoxo

That's a gorgeous thing. We all deserve to give gifts to ourselves.

What a lovely purchase, you are going to have such fun decorating her with flowers. I can see sprays of white sweet peas looking like something from a floor show!

Good for you buying yourself something you love. she is beautiful I am always drawn to the ladies of the 1920-30's statues.
You have learned a valuable lesson in the past I can tell by saying you knew if you left her and went back she would be gone. How many times have I gone back to purchase a treasure and it was gone?

That is so lovely, I am afraid I have a weakness for vases and bowls too! Sarah x

Wen they call out to you it is best to get them.Once home you might think about that you should have and find it gone if you go back.

donna baker said...

You too Kirsten. I feel exactly the same way. I have two old painted retablos and if I find one for a good price I'll let you know. One I paid $100. for and the other about $150. but they were both done by professional painters. One is of El Nino D'Tocha and the other of Mary and Child, but very old on tin. I'll keep an eye out for you.

donna baker said...

How's it going Amanda. Been missing hearing from you. I think it is too.

donna baker said...

Rosemary, I think you are right. How pretty would sweet peas be... I'll have to play around with it to see what looks best.

donna baker said...

Ditto. And it only took me about a minute to decide which I rarely do.

donna baker said...

Sarah, I have too much stuff and have a booth at an antique mall. That's why I try not to buy anything, but I give in sometimes.

donna baker said...

It has happened too many times to count.

Donna, that vase is exquisite. I am picturing all sorts of flowers that will add to her charms. There's something about her that brings to mind posters for the Broadway musical Follies. Perhaps you know the design I mean?

Well done! xo

donna baker said...

She is so pretty Frances. I haven't had buyers remorse so I guess it was meant to be.

Val said...

She is lovely. I myself love head vases. These old pieces are so much more charming than so much made today. Enjoy!

donna baker said...

I used to see more head vases than I do now. I look at her every single day. Thanks Val.

There's just something about the grace and the finish on the Weller pieces, as well as a couple of other coveted "brands" of that era---couldn't you just go by every day and smooth her skirt for luck, or just for the lovely feel of it?

It's not satin, and not china and not any other texture I can name now, but that matte-with-a-subtle-gleam is absolutely mesmerizing to look at. The pose is almost like one of Caro's little pieces of Chiparus---those carefree ladies in the swirling skirts and living in an aura of perfume and smoke.

Hope you've been staying warm, faraway friend---we've been really cold up here, but have luckily been passed by by the latest ice storm. Chris is headed out for "supplies" in case the tailwinds hit us in the next couple of days.

Been wondering about you Rachel. She is very smooth; love the pale pastels and her pose. Yes, I used to watch the pricing on those bone and metal or pottery figurines. I just could never pay those prices. Just had ice and this week will be in the 50's and 60's. Hope to get some things done outside. Take care.
