Ivan Day

I have posted about Ivan Day before.  He is an English food historian and professional chef, with an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of food.  In his latest post at Food History Jottings, foodhistorjottings.blogspot.com, he writes about one my favorite subjects.  I too collect old food moulds, but none as old as these. I am always just amazed when he posts.  It isn't often enough for me. Hurry on over to see his latest.

Here you'll see some of Ivan's collection of antique moulds.

One of his jellies from a macedoine mould.  How gorgeous is this?

Isn't this Belgravia jelly incredible?  I've never seen anyone with the knowledge this man has of all things culinary.  He's been on the BBC and I've seen him on PBS.  Mr. Day is legend in food history.

Currents! Who uses currents any more? Who even knows what they are? We knew these molds as children. My grandmothers and aunts used them with aplomb, mostly for lime Jello with little marshmallows in it.

Don't they look pretty? Can't grow them here, but I have seen the dark, white and red ones. Never have tried them. Some of the early jello molds were glass. I broke that one.

Beautiful, but sadly I don't care for jelly. Love that collection of moulds though.

Oh my. That jelly is amazing. I love the swan moulds in the first pic.

I agree. He has recipe books, utensils and cookware from the 1700's. Maybe earlier.

Oh Monique, I agree. Both with your choice of mold (I have seen something like that) and your love of all cookery things too. My molds are tin or zinc, only a few copper ones, but his are more than two hundred years old. You could read all his posts like a book. I'm going to have to try currants next time I see them.

Me too Pat. I love anything sweet, but if they were filled with liver or innards, I wouldn't touch them.

They are something to behold Sandra and those swans are beautiful. Ivan has prepared period meals and sets on movies and tv. I can see why. His cakes and decorations are really impossible and beautiful.

I watched a documentary on Netflix about a dinner party that was prepared in a true Victorian kitchen. Complete with jellies such as these. Huge amount of work!

I remember when you posted about this before.
I would say a little prayer of thanks and then eat the jellies !
Plus I love currents.

cheers, parsnip

He teaches classes on how to make some of these wonders. More work than I would do. I'm lucky these days to smear peanut butter on a slice of bread.

donna baker said...

Yes, I am mystified by the olden days of cooking. Can't wait to try a currant.

Go look at some of his past posts Jenn. The antique cooking utensils he has are incredible as are his creations.

my sister used to collect antique cooking implements but after she moved, I guess they are in a box somewhere as she no longer has them all hanging on the wall in her kitchen.

Out of sight out of mind. If I find something in a closet or packed away, it's going in the booth.

I remember when you posted about him before Donna ... amazing.
There is a tv programme on here at the moment called ' Royal Recipes ' { BBC } where they are visiting stately homes and cooking dishes that were made for Royal childen and for their birthdays going back many centuries and using those moulds. They also did another one about Royal banquets and used the moulds to make really eleborate desserts. You will probably be able to get it. XXXX

Yes, his recipes go so far back. His blog is like a book.

Oh, I hope I can find it here. They were much more advanced in Europe than we were in the Us in the 1700's.
