Sight

Over a period of four days, my middle daughter has gone blind, in both eyes.  I've never even heard of such a thing.  Sat all day Saturday with her in the ER.  The GP sent her to an ophthalmologist and he says it is Optic Neuritis.  I researched it all afternoon into the night.

It has gotten worse daily.  She said last night, all she can do is sit and hold her new baby girl.  She can't even get the kids uniforms ready for school, or anything else.  She is devastated - bereft.  I'm not sharing any of my research with her, but taking notes.  I'm trying to not catastrophize it, but it's impossible for mothers not to.  Or this mother anyway.

We are going for a contrast MRI today to see what is causing it.  I just hope they can figure out what  is happening. If any of you have known of this or experienced it, please help.

Ooh, Donna I can only imagine how devastating this is, and how scared your beautiful daughter is.
I only have experience with a detached retina, and this sounds completely different, but I'm hoping and praying the doctors can bring her relief and her eye sight will return quickly.

I am so sorry. I suffer with optic neuritis from time to time (it often goes with the territory with multiple sclerosis). It is terrifying when it happens, but in my case DOES subside. I hope (so much) that as the inflammation eases your daughter's sight returns.
Hugs.

Very challenging news, Donna. I wonder if there is such a thing as temporary postpartum blindness?

I truly hope a solution is found immediately. I cannot imagine how she feels or how you feel right now. We all take our health and our bodies for granted until something goes amiss. Thinking of you and your family. Hoping for the best possible news. -Jenn

To each of my dear friends, thank you so for your prayers and good wishes. Just to update, Cady's eyesight has gotten even worse. At first, it was like looking through a kaleidoscope without colors, then as a bright camera flash where your eyes cannot adjust. Yesterday, she said all she could see were black dots where her new baby's mouth and eyes were. And there is pain. She is bereft and scared to death. We are waiting this morning for MRI results and we are trying to get her a referral to Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City where they have the only two neuro opthamologists in the state. I'll keep you updated, and thank you again.

Update - it's Friday and she's on iv steroids and there has been a change. Instead of seeing black, she woke this morning to white vision. We've seen the neuro ophthalmologist at the eye institute, and he said it is very rare to have this in both eyes. But, he also said, sight should come back in week and will begin oral steroids Sunday after she finishes the iv ones. We are hopeful. She will see the neurologist next week to try and find out what caused this. Thank everyone for their prayers and thoughts.

Donna, I've been away from the computer for several weeks and am just now learning of your daughters condition. MY GOSH! How very frightening and tragic for all of the family, But i see in your comment above that she WILL Have her sight back again soon. I hope her doctors get to the bottom of this and that she never has the horrid experience again. My prayers for you and your daughter.

You too Monique. Finished IV steroids Saturday and starts oral steroids today. Still blind today, but we are hopeful every day that her eyesight comes back. Maybe tomorrow. It has just been such a shock as she can't even answer her phone since she can't see where to slide the answer place. Never even imagined losing sight so suddenly and how it impacts living. My poor girl.

Dear Donna, you all are very much in my thoughts. It is encouraging to read your updates about the medical treatment your daughter is receiving. Thank you for taking time to check in. xo

Update ~ more doctor visits and tests and - though at different stages, there is improvement. She can see shadows and some color in one eye. It is slow, but progress nevertheless. Middle daughter wants it back immediately and it is very frustrating for her. So much going on. Wish I could share, but we do what we have to when things like this happen. Love to all for caring.
