Though I love the two dimension art at the Louvre, I was especially drawn to the 3D sculpture hall. Just walked around, awed by the works in marble. When you sculpt with clay, you can mold it by adding the clay or taking it away. After drying the clay, you can then carve into it. I can not imagine working with stone and a chisel and making this look so beautiful. Don't remember her name nor the artist's name, but she was stunning, and hardly anyone was around.

Venus de Milo....we had a reproduction when I was a child....I always wondered what she would have looked like with her arms...really can't imagine what position they would have been in....she doesn't need them anyways....so captivating....
Thanks for the info. I wonder if the artist used a model or just his imagination/knowledge of a woman's body.
We have a painting a friend did of the Venus de Milo in our dining room. The last time I was at the Louvre, I could not get a photo of her because of the crowd flocking around. Love your shot with the beautiful red marble column behind her. Lovely!
Venus de Milo... also known as Aphrodite of Milos, thought to be sculpted by Alexandros of Antioch... Paris gets all the good stuff! :P
Hey... did I mention that was a "sleep number" bed in my cottage white guest room... ;) not as fancy as a plush room in Paris... unless it was Paris TX... but comfy cozy none the less!
Venus de Milo, I've seen her in the Louvre too. I'm always amazed at anyone who can carve beautifully in marble
