Field Sculpture

We go years without snow and this is what we've had for so long, I can't remember when the ground wasn't covered.  It will be melting by the weekend.  I will be in Tulsa or I would go outside naked to feel the warm sunshine on my skin.

I made these armillary spheres (not quite finished) from old rusty wheel forms (don't know if that is what they are called).  They were used to hold wooden wheel pieces or wagon wheels.  We have tons and I figured they would work as field art. By the way, armillary spheres were early celestial globes. Wish I could find an old airplane to put out in the field.  A rocket perhaps?

totally getting the celestial vibe! They are very cool and I love them against the white snow. Brrr!!!

And, I went back in and posted our Dance Studio photos … no video cameras back then and we didn't have a super 8. Which is REALLY ok. ;)

Stark and majestic, showing even more of their worth against the snow.

They're rims, I believe, which seem to have migrated INWARD on modern vehicles, instead of outside the wood holding the spokes together, they're keeping the tires attached and afloat (and offering a sense of the owner's taste/sensibilities/fashion/flash/pocketbook).

I love them Donna !
They have a mysterious and celestial look about them, especially in their snowy setting.

There is a highway heading South out of Houston and there is a metal works shop close by.....somebody made all kinds of huge metal figures! A giant spider, King Kong and quite a few other things. I've never seen snow on any of it though!

I LOVE these forms! Can you do a tutorial on how you made them?

Andie, I am too dumb to figure the follow blog widget. What I do to follow blogs is hit add to blog list and type in the address from the line across the top. Love your blog too. All you do with the wagon wheel rings is make sure they are the same size. I push down on them to fit them into the other ones. Only bad thing is that they are rusty, so be prepared to get rust all over you.

Love the skeletal starkness of the forms against the snow. I wonder what kind of impact a series of even larger forms would have? Maybe that's the idea you have in mind with the airplane parts?

Those are very cool Donna !
Ya, we have the snow too, just had a blizzard and weather man just said more snow Tuesday night.
Thank goodness for my camera , as if it wasn't for the great photo opportunities I would be pulling my hair out by now going stir crazy. I have to say though I am hoping it ends soon.
