If you've followed my blog for awhile, you know that my dogs are my life. They are my best friends and yes, I even love them like family.
Sister, my red weenie, is in trouble. I need your help. She has become diabetic. She has been on insulin for a month now, but I've yet to get her regulated. She won't eat the dog diabetic food.
The Hill's Science Diabetic food comes in hard and soft canned. She refuses the hard and while she ate the canned at first, she now won't eat it. Diabetic dog food requires fiber (both soluble and insoluble) and vegetables and meat in the right percentages. Perfect, yet she won't eat it. And, I'm not going to starve her to make her eat it as she has already lost half her weight and looks skeletal. I already have to lay down on her on the bed to give her her shot because she jumps and pulls away when I try to give it to her.
Do any of you have recipes I could make at home for diabetic dog food? I looked up some on the internet, but am unsure about them being sound and the right proportions. Please let me know if you have recipes or know of someone who does. I'm worried sick about her. She's been so sick, I need to get her on the road to recovery fast. She's always been the ornery one, and now, more so. She loves eating just boiled chicken, but I need to get her eating the other stuff too.
I've owned over 15 dogs in my lifetime and never had one with diabetes. It is killing me. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Ooh dear Donna, I'm so sad to read this :(
I gave my cat Sydney, insulin shots everyday for two years, and I always struggled with his sugar levels.
There seems to be several web-sites which give recipes for diabetic pets, food and treats. I would ask the recommendation of my veterinarian before making any of them, oftentimes they can direct you to a particular site.
Take one day at a time, and know you are doing all you can do to make Sister's days better.
Hugs to you,
~Jo
I am sad too reading this post..
Look at their faces..
Such a wonderful shot..
I wish I had an answer for you..
But I have only known diabetic people..
Both my brothers..to name 2..
Keep researching..and never think something is hopeless..
You have to keep trying to find what will make your doggie..more comfy..and happier..
A quality of life.
Like with us.
Take care..
Oh...I wish I had a suggestion...but I don't. Usually, you just have to not let them eat anything else and they will eat when they are hungry enough....but I know this is not a good solution. She needs to eat. I'd call your vet and ask him for suggestions. Good luck...I know I'd be beside myself if I was having this issue with one of my weenies. I'll be anxious to hear how she is.
What beautiful expressions! I hope someone will have some good suggestions for you.
Thanks for coming round and please know I always appreciate what you do here!
Dearest Donna!
I just saw your comment on my post, and I want to thank you for coming to leave me a comment.
But I want to say that your dogs are simply adorable, striking a pose like two sistas!!!! I wish I could offer some help for you, but I have not dogs and have never even thought of diabetic problems in dogs...I love animals, and it has to be terribly hard to endure watching them struggle. I wish you great success in getting her to eat.
Many thanks again for coming over (and I love your blog banner!)
Anita
Oh gosh, so wish I knew SOMETHING to help. Sweet babies.
Thank you my friends.
Read up on coconut oil!
Donna, I am so sorry to hear this. I understand dogs as family and it is heartbreaking to deal with sickness in our little ones. I wish I had a recipe for you. I hope some one else does! We animal lovers get great joy from our little friends, but when these things happen the pain is JUST as great. I want Sister to live a very long life, I hope and pray for the best. Jeri
