Dogs

I found this book from the 30's at the antique mall.  If you know anything about me, my dogs are the joy of my life, my shadows, love me as much as I love them; I could go on and on.

Evidently, Lucy Dawson (Mac) drew dogs then did their poses in pastel.  She even mentioned doing work for Princess Elizabeth and her beloved Corgis.

This book is one of three dog books that were published, I believe.

This Westie is Timothy.  She writes about how the dogs reacted to her drawing them and their behaviors.

Another Timothy, Lucy said he was a six month old at this sitting and could often be found at Battersea Park.  Such a cute book.  Loved her descriptions of the dogs and their sittings for her portraits.

What charming drawings - she has captured them beautifully and simply. What a lucky find.

I loved her descriptions of the dogs as she drew them, and Princess Elizabeth? It was a long time ago.

What a delightful find. She draws so expressively, and from the sound of it the personality of the dogs entered each one.

Donna, don't you wonder where that book has been before you rescued it from the antiques market? Perhaps you have already done as I have just done and let mr. google find more information about Lucy Dawson. I think you have found a gem. xo

Cairns, Westies and Scotties; my favorites.

Child, each one is just beautiful.

Yes, I had to google her. I think she published three books of her pastels and drawings. All dogs. She must be well known in England.

And poodles, weenies, Alsatians and more. She did many sketches before putting them down in pastels. Lucy (Mac) must have been famous in GB as requested by Princess Elizabeth to do her corgis.

I love the drawings - their expressions are almost human.

These drawings really capture the emotion of the dogs. Nothing quite like their companionship.

I'm a Brit and a devoted former owner of 'smooths' (smooth fox terriers) but I've never come across this artist and shall have to search her out. I have often drawn my dogs, but only when sleeping, they were far too prone to shift position when awake. I'm very impressed by a six-month old posing so well!

That sat one was for you and the Ham.

She was very good without a picture to go from. I don't know how she could work that fast. She did many drawings before the finished pastel.

No nothing is as loyal and loving so unconditionally.

Yes Rosemary. I am surprised that not one of my Brit friends has seemed to have heard or know of her. I can't imagine drawing a dog without a photo.

She nailed their personalities it seems:)

She was very good to capture them from life.

I am going to have to proof more as I find many errors. That was 'last' not sat.

I've always wanted a Scottie, she really captured the little bugger in pastels. An artist could easily make a living painting nothing but dogs, the interest is so huge.

donna baker said...

I agree Jeri. The old dog paintings are going for very high prices. I've tried about every medium but never pastels.

That was a lovely book to find! She has captured so well in the picture of Timothy the typical pose of the Westie. Tavi is sitting beside me looking just like that at the moment! Sarah x

I thought of Tavi, Sarah. Lucy (Mac) was a wonderful artist and successful; her sketches were so cute.
