King Cake - A Little Late

I was told this little old pottery face is what was used in a King Cake.  The beholder of the slice with the face embedded, was bestowed luck or something.  Maybe they didn't have to give up anything for lent and hopefully, didn't crack a tooth.

Some superstitions I don't need to know. I think it's a plastic doll, now.

I love your collections Donna..post away anytime:)

Wouldn't want plastic in my cake. Would think it would release toxins or melt.

Well thank you Monique.

So many treasures sweet lady....
I suspect the doll face in the cake, has the same meaning as the silver sixpence in the English plum pudding at Christmas !
Lovely post Donna.

Such an eclectic and intriguing collection. Thank you. Not certain I would welcome that face in my cake, but a little luck never goes astray.

Thank you Jo. Probably so. Hope your weekend was as beautiful in the garden as mine.

I looked it up and it is supposed to bring luck and prosperity to the biter. Plus, you have to bake the one for the next year. If it is sweet, I'll eat it.

I have heard of it, I will have a slice.

Cake? What's not to love? I haven't ever tried a King Cake.

I have tried a European version having to do with The Three Kings Day (three wisemen) holiday observed in certain countries. One purchases a 'three kings cake'--more like sweet, white bread--serves it to multiple people, and the one who gets the tiny, plastic, kewpie-doll-like toy king in her piece of 'cake' gets to wear a paper crown (for the rest of the day). Here we'd sue someone for putting a wee, inedible thing in our food that kids could choke on.

You're right Bea. I think all of the lawsuit days were the beginnings of the dark path to Trump.

My late mother in law made simpler version, silver coins and one toothpick. The unlucky slice with the toothpick found you doing all the cleaning up. Love your little collection.

In Mexico, the tradition for whomever gets the slice of Kings cake with the doll in it, is that they have to throw the next big party. King's cake is more of a bread than a cake. The Mexican bakeries put plastic dolls in them. I'll bet your cute ceramic face was for a Kings cake from New Orleans:-)

I love your assortment of items here. I agree with Ry, I would think your face came from a NOLA King Cake.

Thank you Doc. My little table (cabinet) of curiosities.

It does seem very old Ry.

donna baker said...

The ones I've seen are covered in brightly colored sugars. Don't look so appetizing. It is old.

donna baker said...

Thank you Debbie. I am a magpie if nothing else.

Still playing catch up with your fine posts, Donna. So far, I am keeping true to my Lenten vow of no chocolate...although some choc bunnies are beginning to wink at me. xo

I do too Gayle. Though I will part with some things, others never.
