Oh, my aching back. After siphoning this putrid swill down my throat, you'll remember, I drained the goldfish pond at the city house.
To this. I was shocked how much the gopher dug from the ground and deposited in my pond.
Ta daa. I filled up three blue storage containers with the slimy, stinky muck and mud. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Can't wait to get it cleaned out and another siphon then the filter and fish. Yay! I wasn't shouting yay while doing all the work though.

Back breaking work, but you've finished the job....
I'm so happy for you :)
Now you have to figure out, how to keep that old gopher out of there !
~Jo
I am thinking of laying hardware cloth or chicken wire around two sides of the pond. Some of the rocks are too heavy for me to move. My bending over and heavy lifting days are just about over. In reality, they have passed.
Dear Donna catching up on your previous posts. Wow what a big job friend. I am sure my back would be aching too. Those plants look great. Groundcovers are the best. Once planted they seem pretty easy to grow. Hugs!
I love easy nowadays. And perennials. The pond job I have been dreading since last fall.
My goodness, that was such a huge undertaking, Donna. Glad that's in the rear view mirror.
Looks nice, a lot of hard work will pay off. I was pulling water out of a friend pool last year and it didn't taste real bad until we found the squirrel who had drowned in it. I never want to help him again
Are we having fun yet? lol
Oh My Goodness. The heavy duty wire will help.
I have packrats and other pests that is how I keep them away.
Since you are still here I guess the yucky water hasn't destroyed you yet.
cheers, parsnip and thehamish
Me too Sandra. It all down hill, I hope.
Had a dead rat in my pool once. Our big problem was getting all the leaves and water off the cover. World war each spring. Now, there is a greenhouse in its spot.
Not yet.
I kept waiting for stomach cramps. Had a friend filming in India and he took a dip in the Ganges. Had terrible stomach cramps and parasites within 24 hours.
Well done. And how lucky that you seem to have survived the putrid swill.
Oh dear, I really hope you don't suffer any effects of that water!! That was a big job! Hardware cloth sounds like just the thing! Also a live trap!! Do you have one? My lower back can't take much anymore. Very frustrating because there is much that I want to do! -Jenn
I'm kind of surprised too.
I do have a trap Jenn. Problem is, that darn gopher is all under that lava rock or whatever kind of rock it is and I can't catch him. Rats have been using his tunnels and I am catching them, plus learned I can't leave my bird feeders next to the house. Rat magnets.
That is a huge amount of work and I know you are glad it is finished!
Almost. The worst is over, I hope.
Once it is done..and filled and gurgling..you'll be so happy..hard work..is always more and more difficult:( I remember when nothing really got in my way.:(
I know you will be so proud:)
What a job! Nowadays, I am only able to do physical work every other day. That little bugger of a gopher is really giving you a run for your money. Not sure how you are going to keep him out of your garden.😫
Phew, that was some task, Donna. Now I'm just hoping that the gopher will gofar away!
Those were the days Monique. I could do it all in my forties. Can't wait to have it working again. Have to hurry to beat the mosquitos.
They are everywhere around here. I live about a mile from a big river, the Arkansas River. Maybe that is the draw.
Me too Rosemary. I'm going this evening to buy hardware cloth to hopefully keep it from happening again.
You are heroic! I am far too wimpy for such a mess. I hope you did not get sick! My current nemesis is a feisty raccoon. Pulls down all the bird feeders every night. Sad. (Haha!) Best of luck with all the rest!
Aw shucks. It was too much for me and I'm going to see if the yard guys will move the rocks tomorrow. Raccoons are so cute. My husband catches them in a cage and hauls them off. I once had a momma and 3 youngsters in my house through the doggie door. It got closed after that.
Well that's that - I'm no longer wishing for a pond in the back garden! OMG Donna, your poor back and other bits must be in agony - I know now I could never go through it, gophers or whatever! I've never had them visit ever and don't want to encourage any new wildlife- enough with foxes, raccoons, possums and old feral cats!
All of the above Mary. And worst, water moccasins which are very poisonous. I used to try and fish them out with swimming pool nets before I knew what they were. This little city pond is 10 times smaller than the one at the farm, which I haven't done this spring yet. Don't have to drain it, but get in and chop away at the water lily roots and haul out wheelbarrows of leaves and water plants. I am green from head to toe. And yet, they are so pretty and soothing otherwise. The fish swim up to the edge to see me and even have names.
It is going to be perfect when it's done. Your gardens just look amazing.
Can't wait till it's done. Too many things to do.
Bravo Donna! xo
Thanks Frances. I am now moving mountains of rock and laying hardware cloth around the pond.
