A Patch Of Blue

Life throws curves from time to time.  And, out of the blue.

We've turned the corner and my middle daughter's sight is returning.  From white and lined, to total darkness in the blink of an eye.  Well, two weeks actually and it seems like much longer.  Poor girl was scared, frustrated and literally could not do much of anything.  Even eating was hard until she figured out that a sandwich or something like it was easier than using utensils.

After hospitalizations and many doctor visits, IV steroids, MRI's and the like, color is returning and she can now read in one eye and see shadows in the other.  Her neurologist said he has only seen one other patient in his career, that lost sight in both eyes at once with her condition.  Very rare, but it always seems to be unless you're the one with it.

She has struggled so, but has made it to the other side; a real trooper.  Neurologist will follow up with her every six months and if no other symptoms after 5 years, he will say it is not MS.

We are over the moon.  This has been a trial for all of us.  Blue skies shining down on us.

Thanks to all of you.

I planned on emailing you tonight to get an update as you have been in my thoughts. SO happy to hear of improvement and praying for total recovery and quickly. I know as a mama your heart has been hurting.

Jenn, thank you. It has been a trial with a nine and ten year old and new baby. I am so thankful her eyesight is coming back.

Child, thank you. I thought of you many times over this period.

Yes, it hurt all of us to see her struggle so. I had never even heard of such a thing. She had just been back to work for a week after childbirth and then it happened. She had to take short term disability from work. It has been baby steps.

Oh Jo, it is. I thought it surely was related to childbirth and the epidural. I even found a case through the NIH for blindness that happened 6 weeks post epidural c-section. I should have a Ph.D. by now in Optic Neuritis and MS. Husband thought it was a Pituitary Adenoma as we don't have MS in our family. Just so thankful her eyesight is coming back. She wishes it were quicker, but it could take longer. We are just staying positive and helping out where we can. I teased her at one time that she was just having withdrawals from Facebook.

Donna, I can't tell you how happy I am for your daughter, you and all the little ones who love their mama! This is the best news, I have honestly kept her in my prayers every single day, and it is wonderful that she is recovering!

Amanda Summer said...

Oh Donna my gosh I just read this…….I am so sorry your daughter has had to struggle so much. I will be saying a prayer that she has a complete recovery --- sending big hugs to you. xoxoxo

donna baker said...

Thank you so Jeri. It was the worst of times. She went to the neuro ophthalmologist today and he said it could be neuromyelitist optica which mimics MS but is part of the spectrum. Just hope it's all a fluke and over with.

donna baker said...

Means so much Amanda. I even prayed to whoever is out there.

What a dreadful time you have all been having. We really don't appreciate what we have until something like this happens especially as it changed so fast as in your daughter's case. So pleased that she is regaining some of her sight again. I hope it will continue to approve. Sarah x

Thank you Sarah. It is sobering when things like that happen. We are very hopeful. Thank you Sarah.
