Is It Dead?

Well, this is how I spent my Memorial Day.  Watching my weenies for twitching, foaming at the mouth, vomiting and seizures.  Yes, quite the cautionary tale.  My sweetest Emmy snored and dreamt a little.  Ornery Sister, was at the other end of the couch and since she has medical issues and both of my little girls are elderly, I watched them like a hawk.

I have had problems with gophers, moles and sewer rats.  They have tunneled all over and in my flower beds.  After trying traps, I bought some poison.  I have never used it before, but they were tunneling everywhere. So, I measured some and poured it down the hole.  I stuffed steel wool over it and cut out some heavy hardware cloth (metal) and put it on top then hammered some spikes in it to keep it down.  I covered it with dirt and flower seeds.  That was two weeks ago.

This morning, I saw the girls little butts sticking out of a hibiscus shrub and knew what they were up to.  As I walked over I passed by the poisoned place and glanced at it. They had not only torn the hardware cloth away, but had also pulled out the steel wool.  I about had a heart attack.  I replaced all and put rocks over it, then hurried in the house and called my vet.  She gave me the symptoms to look for and said they could take hours to appear.  She is 2 hours away and I'm sure not too happy to hear from me on a rare day off. She didn't think after two weeks and rain that they'd be in danger, but told me the steps an animal hospital would take.

So, still no symptoms and perhaps we dodged a catastrophe today.  I wish I had a large margarita, but I don't.  Tonight, after a frozen tv dinner, I'll be watching the third season of Bloodline and House of Cards.  They are both really good.

Note to self - never use poison again.  I've seen new tunnels and the rat eating at the bird feeder so it isn't dead.  Aye yay yay!

Aaaaargh.
We learnt our lesson about poison with a German Shepherd. We had an ant problem. My mother put down less than a teaspoon of Ded-Ant near their entrance into the house. Seconds later the Shepherd licked it up. And puked bright pink almost immediately. Convulsions, frothing at the mouth. We only just saved her.
The ants weren't bothered.
I am glad you and your weenies have escaped this bullet.

DONNA ! Oh My Goodness !
I understand your problem. Somedays you just can't win.
Your sweet babbie are Dachshunds... they love to dig and squeeze in holes. The bad bad duggie. I think they do stuff like this just to drive us crazy. Bad bad gud dugs.
But I really hope they are fine and did not eat any bad stuff. Plus all I want to do is give Emmy lots of belly rubs. One of the best things you can do, except on a male Square Dog.
thehamish sends lots of gurrrrrrrrers
cheers, parsnip

Oh thank you Child. My weenies are like my children. I learned a lesson too.

donna baker said...

Yes you do Gayle. Always something. Yes, they love to dig, but Emmy usually plays Sister's wingman. Sister does all the work and Emmy stands back waiting for the critter to run her way. I wouldn't bother, but they are killing many plants and flowers. I give up though.

Oh, Donna, The minute I started to read your post, my heart started to sink. Hopefully, your Vet has got it right and your sweeties will be OK. We have got to shoo away any more black clouds that are drifting your way. Positive thoughts for smooth sailing forward!

I hope everything improves around the townhouse and garden soon Donna - especially with your 'babies'. Do your neighbors have rat problems too? Do you have an association which can address this issue which must come from the lake/pond - sounds somewhat dangerous and a possible health problem perhaps?
I even hate spraying Roundup on my weeds - dangers lurk in all garden chemicals and I try to keep any to a minimum and hope Nature will do her work well!

Take care - Mary

All too normal at the farm and city. I need to finish planting all the rest of seeds and flowers today.

I've seen many gopher hills in the neighborhood. I live between three rivers and it must be conducive for rodents. Easy digging. Sure not using poison anymore.

I don't do poison either but when I got a rat in the walls there was no other choice since they were coming in from underneath the house. this was a hard cake and I stuffed it through the hole where the plumbing comes out near where I could hear it in the wall, then piled up bricks to cover up and around the hole. of course the damn thing died IN the wall. little bastard. but then this was before the little dog showed up and made herself at home.

Fingers crossed, Donna. xo

They are smart. I am at a loss and so is my garden. I saw another big hole down by the dock and thought, if I put some poison down it and covered it up with rocks, then maybe...

donna baker said...

Guess I need to hire a professional rat and gopher catcher.

It's always something! I can't put rat poison in the barn for fear that some other critter will discover it. It seems like your little wieners will be fine, they dodged the bullet. Stinkers!

donna baker said...

Yes, thank goodness. It really is always something, including all the pre-teens and teens I'm having to run off or yell at for throwing rocks at the waterfowl. I am become that mean old lady of the lake.

Judging by your report on the terrain and weather, there might even be a competitive market for said skills. (Have I been listening to the Pres too long?) xo

donna baker said...

No. And neither are my weenies.

donna baker said...

We live and learn. Some of us anyway. Yes, watching season 3 of Bloodline and I'm on the edge of my seat. Poor John, where's Meg, how are they going to get out of this...
Never watched Suits and will see if it is on Netflix. Can't wait for HOC. Just started watching The Following. I can't wait until they come out with another season of The Killing. I loved that one.

I saw a truck all painted with signs about Critter Ridders or something. I can't quit watching it either. Something everyday. Don't know what it's going to take to get him out of there. Seems it will be the Russia dealings, but he's done far worse as far as I'm concerned.

Yikes! Hope the pups are alright.
I binge watched Bloodline last month. Love Sam Shepard in anything! The scenery is rather nice as well as I'm a fan of the Florida keys.

donna baker said...

Yes, they are good, thank you. Such a story. I just started the latest episodes. The Rayburns certainly aren't the typical family. I have that same recurrent dream that Meg has.

OH MY GOSH I'm so glad Emmy and the Ornery Sister are OK after that scare.
Bless their little hearts

donna baker said...

Oh thank you. Even the best laid plans...

Sandra Cox said...

Whew! How scary for you.

1st Man said...

Oh man that's a cautionary tale of terror for sure. So glad all is turning out ok. Thank you for this info. Now go kiss those babies on their little foreheads. :-)

donna baker said...

I wish I was chill about these things. If it doesn't concern my family or pets I am cool as a cucumber.

donna baker said...

Hope you can figure out how to get the critters out of your garden. Armadillos dig little holes all over the lawn for grubs. Guess they would climb up in raised beds too.

Sandra Cox said...

Dealing with underground critters is really tough.
The HH thinks we've got a mole.
Glad those babies are okay.
Have a good one.

Jacqueline~Cabin and Cottage said...

So glad your babes are okay! There is always something fascinating here. I have to check out Bloodlines and crystals. Our nature pests are mostly raccoons and skunks. Critters sure seem to be hard to outsmart. Happy June!

donna baker said...

Thank you Sandra.

donna baker said...

Oh, my dogs have had run ins with skunks before. Have a good June too.

Jacqueline @ HOME said...

Oh Yuk .... I would have to do something to get rid of them Donna but your pets are far more important ... so pleased that they seem OK. XXXX

donna baker said...

I didn't think I'd have problems like this in the city. On the farm, there is always something that is a nuisance.

Bea said...

Oh, my! It's sounds like you fortified the spot really well, but persistence paid off. :(

House of Cards is really well done. I wish it weren't hitting so close to home with respect to covering topics like the proposed travel ban.

On a lighter note, I marvel at how Robin Wright's character can successfully walk in 6 inch heels.

donna baker said...

Oh, I love that show. Homeland too. The writers are definitely following the times we are in. Yes, Sister and Emmy definitely get into trouble if I am not keeping an eye on them.

I hate using any chemicals, we did however get the pest controller in when we had a problem with mice. Hope the weenies are still ok. Sarah x

donna baker said...

They're good Sarah. Thank you.

Dear Donna - praying your two sweeties are fine. This is certainly not a great way to spend Memorial Day. Thank you too friend for your visit to my blog. Take care and have a great week.

donna baker said...

Thank you Debbie. Thinking of you.

The Dutchess said...

O dear..scary..yes..I had a sweet little dog named Daisy..she was poisoned by a neighbor..the tears I cried..Take care over-there..xoxo

Share my Garden said...

Oh, the worry. Poison simply isn't worth the risk. I hope that everyone has recovered well.

Sandra Cox said...

Monster Kitty just took out a vole.

donna baker said...

Oh Dutchess, that is pure evil. My weenie, Sister, is the bionic dog and I have spent a small fortune on her. I think I would have the neighbors tied up in lawsuits for years.

donna baker said...

Yes, we are still tending the garden and rolling in anything stinky.

donna baker said...

My cats were very good at catching moles. You don't think of cats as diggers.
