Bunting

Well, I have tried and failed to capture my beautiful bunting.  I have probably taken 30 pictures from different angles, in different light and the iPhone cannot do it justice.  I ordered 20 feet of this from England.  It was to be made of handkerchiefs, but alas, it is just printed fabric.  I never send anything back.  Anyway, it goes across my covered patio and I hope it is not bothering all the nesting birds in the birdhouses.

I googled bunting as I thought it was an English thing and I have always loved it.  But, what if it were French?  So, it seems in the seventeenth century, sailors made bunting from wool and hanged it from ship ropes or something.  Just love it. I'd probably have it down to the lake and in the trees if I could.

Donna, I love it anyway, even if it is printed fabric. Makes me want to have my own bunting across the porch. I wonder if the sailors just did it for SHIP DECOR, or did it have a practical purpose?

It was made in the union jack flags. Just beautiful. Guess those British Man Of Wars wanted pirates to know they were coming.

Donna, how lovely !
We are akin with our love of bunting, it is such an "English" thing to me, since it was used in all the garden fetes and church hall gatherings, garden parties, and street parties when I was growing up. You may remember I made bunting for my granddaughter's wedding, 300 feet or more ! I didn't want to make bunting ever again, but guess what....I've made many more since:)
Enjoy yours around that beautiful pond.
Hugs,
~Jo

I forgot about all that bunting you made Jo. Do you have bunting up at your house? I just think it is the neatest thing. Love the traditions you mentioned.

Bunting has been out in force here in Yorkshire this weekend as it has been the Tour de Yorkshire - a huge three day bicycle race. Yorkshire colours are blue and yellow and it has looked magnificent in the sunshine.

Hugs to you Deb. I looked for so long for just the right colors. I couldn't decide and finally decided on the handkerchiefs but love the chintzes too. And stripes. Not enough places to hang all the bunting I love.

Oh Pat, I would have loved to see it. I imagine the cobbled streets with bunting in Downton Abbey.

Yes, we Brits love our bunting - it was always prevalent at garden fetes, outdoor teas etc. during my childhood, I can still picture it all so well. When in Hawaii I bought prayer flags strung together and hung them in my back garden trees. Sadly they faded and shredded quickly so I threw them out - hope your English ones last a long time, enjoy Donna.

I have my bunting hanging in the potting shed, and the union jack one hanging from the split rail fence.
I love to start my day looking at it :)

I love bunting, too. My friend has strings of bunting in her garden, but hung on the square, not as triangles. I finally asked her and she said Oh, No, they're Tibetan prayer flags. You know, when the cotton has weathered away, the prayer has gone into the universe. Now I know. Not bunting, but a fine story.

Bunting is not a big thing here (Canada), but we saw plenty of it when we went on a trip to England a couple of years ago. Yours is very sweet in the outdoor space. -Jenn

Mary I know I was British in another life as I so love all things British. I love looking at my bunting.

I smile each time I see it, Bea.

Oh how I would love that shop. I have wanted some for such a long time and got this last year and just put it up. It makes me smile every time I see it.

donna baker said...

Make sure and take pictures as I would love to see it.

A long time ago on the farm, I hung bandanas on a cedar tree in my own version of prayer flags. The locals thought it was really weird.

Right out my back windows so I can enjoy it in and out. Just love it.

donna baker said...

It sure is a little thing to make me so happy.

Very interesting Joanne. I didn't know that about the weathering. Mine is under the overhang so I sure hope it doesn't weather too soon.

donna baker said...

It's a simple thing to make me so happy.

Gayle, I was having trouble with comments today too. Guess it got fixed. Hello back.

Evening, Donna! Wow, I've never even heard of it. Love how something like this can make us so happy. And oh my but what a gorgeous water view you have! I would love to see the Downton Abbey bunting!

donna baker said...

Hey Kirsten. Nice to hear from you. They make bunting in every color and design you can imagine. Kind of like wallpaper. I love my water view. Baby hatches of birds, waterfowl, turtles are happening along with my garden starting to bloom. Life is good for now. I really enjoy my city house.
